Haley’s Cenote Writing

I’ve been taking a descriptive writing class for a little while, and my assignment for today was to write about a memorable experience, so I chose to write about one of the cenotes we went to last week with the Scotts, and I thought I’d share it here. (you can find my mom’s post about our experience here).

The Cenote

Last week, I went to a cenote. As I climbed down the stairs into the cave, I immediately saw the deep, clear water and heard the noisy bats flapping their wings and calling out to each other from their little perches. I got to the platform floating on the deep blue abyss, and saw the rays of sunshine coming down from a hole in the ceiling, and illuminating the water below. A bat flew right past my face, and I went underwater to escape my fear of the bats. I had to come back up quite quickly, because the water was freezing, and I felt like an ice cube. I swam up to the edges of the cenote, and felt the smooth, water-eroded walls. I looked down into the amazingly-clear water and saw my body perfectly, but I couldn’t see the deep floor of the cave two hundred feet down. I was struck by a moment of fear, and I had to get out. I was terrified of it at first, but I’m glad I went in anyway.
