Venice, Italy

The 4th stop on the Shermano Tour of Italy 2017 is Venice! We secured a cute little apartment outside the city and were thrilled when the owner showed us how easy it was to take a bus to the island. Someone telling us how to do something so we don’t have to figure it out ourselves? Golden!

So on the night we arrived we did our obligatory grocery shopping and had a nice dinner in the little town. By this time I have had entirely too much gluten. Although I can tolerate European gluten much better than American gluten, it was still getting to be a bit much. And Haley and I both reached the point where we were ready for vegetables. You know it’s bad when we order vegetables at a restaurant. #noscurvyforme

But the next day we were right as rain and headed into the city on the bus. Venice was lovely, as usual. In a Venice kind of way. You know… the kind of way that doesn’t involve any actual Italians, but just tourists. #ugh #likeus

We spent the first day wandering around, as opposed to the second day, which was spent wandering around. We just ambled down streets looking for things that might interest us. We stopped for gelato, as usual, and we stopped in little stores that had fun things to look at, which was all of them. We had no agenda although my goal was to wander down a street to find it dead end at a canal. We achieved that goal although it was not nearly as fun as it sounds when you’ve been walking ALL. DAY. and your feet are sore.

The next day we switched it up and went out to the island of Murano to wander around. This is where they do all the glass work. Fun fact: the glass workers ended up on the island of Murano because the town of Venice said “take your fire risk and go elsewhere, but when you’re done making cool stuff, bring it back over here”. We didn’t end up seeing actual glass blowing but we’ve seen it a few times before and we get the gist. We did get very distracted by all the stores and how each one had something different. There were a few purchases that made no sense given that we each have one suitcase, but sometimes logic is thrown into a nearby canal when you see a super cute glass platypus. This is what happens when Dan sends us to Venice by ourselves because he has to go buy a new phone. #byebyeapple

Venice was a quick trip but it was enough. We were feeling a bit bewildered of always being lost, having spent the much of the last 6 months… perpetually lost. It’s not so charming after awhile. But Venice is a beautiful city with a totally different vibe of water as a way of life. Here are a few pictures we snapped while wandering around.

One of the bigger canals but not the biggest in Venice.

Of course, there are gondola rides. We did not partake.

Here’s the deets on these hands in case you’re curious.

Venice is sinking. You can see this tower lean, just like in Pisa.

Just a normal scene as you wander around Venice. It was charming, in a “How can I get all those other tourists out of my picture?” kind of way.

This goat is made of glass. How do they do that??? And how can I put it in my suitcase?

Haley has a glass animal collection back in Arizona. There was a lot of gasping in Venice and on the island of Murano especially.

Venice had the most expensive bathrooms we have found anywhere in Europe. Oh Venice, why you gotta be so rude? #Zoehasthesmallestbladderonearth

Haley snapped this one while we were getting on the water bus. In general, Italian cities at night are magical.
