Isla Mujeres, our new favorite island

Allison Sherman Posted onMarch 1, 2016September 9, 2018 1 Comment 4991 Views

We like islands. We seem to gravitate to them in our travels. We’ve been to Hawaii 4 times, South Padre Island twice, Bocas del Toro 3 times and Isla Iguana 3 times. We went to Cozumel a few weeks ago and yesterday we added Isla Mujeres. At this time it has shot to #1 on our list. What a pretty and fun island!

We had a very pleasant and short ferry ride from Cancun. Like in all tourist spots, we were mildly accosted when we got off the boat with guys desperate to sell us their goods and services. We soon found ourselves in line to rent a golf cart (we had planned to do it anyway) and in about 10 minutes we were hitting the open road with the breeze in our faces. We love golf carts! Well, Daniel didn’t know what to do with himself with such slow speeds, but when you have speed bumps every 20 feet it’s not like you could really pick up any speeding tickets.

We had a wonderful day and Nanna enjoyed it too. Pictures speak louder than words so here is our day in pictures:

Our ferry. $7usd per person for round trip. Sold!

Zoe and I on the ferry. The water color is really that blue.

Haley is not so fond of boats but this one was a snap.

Our golf cart! We got a grande one for $42 for the whole day so we all fit more comfortably and faced the same direction.

Views from The Cart. Gorgeous beaches.

The sand is like flour. But no swimming on this part of the east side. Strong currents on this side of the island.

Daniel drove the golf cart halfway down this sandy path. Zoe freaked out. Daniel sighed, wondering when he inherited a family of ninnies.

We found a little hotel for our lunch spot. Amazing views.

Zoe and Nanna exploring the hotel after lunch. Again, the water really is that color!

Checking out a zipline snorkel adventure park. We grabbed a brochure for future visits.

Next we went to Ixchel Temple on the southern tip of the island. These are some Mayan ruins, although the most memorable part were the views from the high cliffs. It was stunning and very fun to explore. There were very few safety fences so if you go, steer your clumsy kids away from the edge.

We continued exploring the island and found the turtle sanctuary. It did not meet my educational goals as there was not a lot of info about them, but we liked the big ones in the sea pen outside.

Zoe watching the big turtle.

We heard about a guy who created his own little island using plastic bottles to make it float. We didn’t meet him but we saw his little oasis.

image
Is it an island? A house? A boat? Who knows.

Here are a few scenes from the road: A hotel Zoe was very connected to and some fellow tourists, only with much cooler vehicles.

When we got home our cook was already preparing tostadas and we were treated to this amazing sunset. Es bueno!
