Had quite the adventure today. We decided to go to our favorite beach during a pouring down rain storm. Thought it would be cool to be at the beach when it’s raining and it won’t be so hot. Well the road to this beach isn’t great when it’s sunny. So of course, Allison is telling me every few minutes that she is 100% against this journey (Mrs Worry Wart) and me and kids are “all in” for this adventure.
When we arrived at the beach and decided it was best to not be on an open beach during a lightning storm. (A woman was killed by lightning here in Pedasi about a week before we got here.) So we took a short video and turned around.
In the short time that we passed this part of the road on the way in (10 min maybe) the road at this particular spot had already become inundated with water. It’s a river that runs to the ocean a few hundred feet to our right.
Hmmm…. what to do? Certainly don’t want to be in the news as the gringo family that lost their car in Pedasi Panama. But there is absolutely no other way out to civilization. And as you know, running water only continues to destroy. Unless the rain abates soon, it wasn’t going to recede any time in the near future. And that’s IF there’s any road left when it does decide to recede.
So we wait it out for a bit.
As we sat there contemplating which kid to eat if we started to starve (and if they would ever write the canibalism survival story called the “Sherman Party”) along comes a car behind us. We let them go in front of us, hoping they’d be stupid enough to risk the drive through the river. Sure enough… after the driver got out and walked it first, he got back in and started his car towards destiny.
Seeing as how his car was lower than ours and we have 4 wheel drive, I quickly decided it was time to see the other side of the river. Haley was practically begging me to stop. Zoe was neutral and believe it or not (upon viewing the video again, I guess Zoe was against it too… ha!), Allison was hesitantly on the side of trying it. (Only after she saw the car do it.)
Luckily we went for it because that was a couple of hours ago and it’s STILL raining hard.
Just another day in Panama.
